CONOCE A WILMARIE
I wear many hats in my life as a toddler mom, small business owner, and educator that allow me to connect with community members from different walks of life.
I am uniquely qualified for this position on the Alhambra Elementary Governing board because my life’s work in education and community engagement have prepared me to work with my community, to represent our families, and to serve with heart and purpose for our students.
My husband and I have been married for almost 4 years and met at the start of the pandemic. My husband is a proud Marine Corps Combat Veteran who served in the Middle East. We share a two-and-a-half year old daughter, Isla, and a rescue dog, Yuma.
I was born in Puerto Rico, and was raised in Philadelphia, in Philadelphia Public Schools. I moved to Phoenix 8 years ago through Teach for America and received my Master’s degree in Elementary Education from Arizona State University. In Phoenix, I’ve had the pleasure of teaching kindergarten and first grade, in addition to supporting struggling readers K-12.
I was inspired to run for office by other leaders within their communities that never planned on running, but felt compelled to by the needs of the community. I hope to serve with honor and integrity.
Desempeño múltiples roles en mi vida: soy madre de una pequeñita, dueña de un negocio pequeño, y educadora; estas facetas me permiten conectar con miembros de la comunidad provenientes de diversos ámbitos.
Cuento con una cualificación única para ocupar este puesto en la Junta Directiva del Distrito Escolar Primario de Alhambra, ya que mi trayectoria profesional —dedicada a la educación y al compromiso comunitario— me ha preparado para trabajar junto a mi comunidad, representar a nuestras familias y servir con corazón y propósito a nuestros estudiantes.
Mi esposo y yo llevamos casi cuatro años de casados; nos conocimos justo al inicio de la pandemia. Él es un orgulloso veterano de combate del Cuerpo de Marines, con servicio prestado en Oriente Medio. Compartimos una hija de dos años y medio, Isla, y un perro adoptado, Yuma.
Nací en Puerto Rico y crecí en Filadelfia, donde cursé mis estudios en las escuelas públicas de la ciudad. Me mudé a Phoenix hace ocho años a través del programa Teach for America y obtuve mi maestría en Educación Primaria en la Universidad Estatal de Arizona (ASU). Aquí en Phoenix, he tenido el placer de impartir clases en jardín de niños, preescolar, y primer grado, además de brindar apoyo a estudiantes con dificultades en la lectura en todos los niveles, desde preescolar hasta el último año de secundaria (K-12).
Me inspiré a postularme para este cargo gracias a otros líderes comunitarios que, si bien nunca habían planeado entrar en la política, se sintieron impulsados a hacerlo ante las necesidades de su comunidad. Espero servir con honor e integridad.
